Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson’s feature film Under the Tree and Ragnar Bragason’s TV drama Prisoners, have the most nominations for this year’s Icelandic film & TV awards.

Under the Tree produced by Netop Films has 12 nods including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Lead Actor and Best Lead Actress. The film had its world premiere at Venice’s Orizzonti sidebar and was Iceland’ Oscars entry-Best Foreign Language 2018.

The second most nominated film is Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir’s feature debut The Swan, running in 9 categories such as Best Film, Screenplay and Best Director. The coming of age drama had its world premiere in Toronto and won Best Director in Cairo and Kolkata.

The Danish/Icelandic film Winter Brothers by Hlynur Pálmason which swept the Danish Robert film awards with nine wins earlier this month, has a unique chance to pick up the same Best Film and Best Male Acting award (Elliott Crosset Hove) at the Eddas, as well as Best Supporting Actor (Lars Mikkelsen). The film produced by Denmark’s Masterplan Pictures with Iceland’s Join Motion Pictures, received a Special Mention Award at Nordic Talents 2013. Last year’s biggest grossing film I Remember You by Oskar Thór Axelsson has a chance to win Best Actor and Best Cinematography.

Meanwhile the series Prisoners co-written by Bragason and Margrét Örnólfsdóttir for Mystery Productions, has a record 14 Edda nods including Best TV Drama, Best Director and Best Screenplay. The drama aired on RUV in January 2017.

The neo-Noir drama Stella Blómkvist runs in 8 categories such as Best Drama series, and Best Actress. The Sagafilm production was a huge hit for Síminn’s premium SVOD service this autumn.

Also vying for Best TV drama, as well as Best Children & Youth programme and TV programme is Bragi Þór Hinriksson’s Promises produced by Hreyfimyndasmiðjan for RUV. 

Nordisk Film & TV Fond is associated to a combined 28 Edda nominations for Under the Tree, Prisoners and I Remember You.

The Edda awards ceremony will be held on February 25 and will be broadcast live on RUV.
