Triangle of Sadness triumphs at Swedish Guldbagge with 6 statuettes

Monday evening’s 58^th Guldbagge film awards was another sweeping success for Östlund’s satire of the super-rich which predictably topped the local film awards, after its plethora of heavy international accolades including the Palme d’or in Cannes and four European Film Academy Awards.

In the acting categories, Filippino’s Dolly de Leon who plays the resourceful Abigail and turns the social ladder upside down, won Best Supporting Actress, an accolade given earlier to her by the Los Angeles Films Critics Association. Croatian actor Zlatko Burić  who stars as the Russian billionaire and unlikely communist Dimitri won Best Supporting Actor, just a month after scooping Best Actor at the EFA awards.

Two young newcomers who impressed with their screen debuts - Granit Rushiti in Jens Sjögren’s I am Zlatan and Sigrid Johnson in Sanna Lenken’s Comedy Queen won respectively Best Actor and Best Actress.

Writer/director Lenken who discovered Johnson after a casting process and guided her to play the delicate role of Sasha (13) (see our story: CLICK HERE) was also honoured last night, with the Gullspira for ‘extraordinary contributions in films for children’.

Comedy Queen won last year’s Crystal Bear for Best Film at the Berlinale Generation Kplus.

I am Zlatan in which Rushiti plays football star Zlatan Ibrahimović aged 17, was last year’s biggest Swedish hit in local cinemas.

In other major wins, Tarik Saleh was voted Best Scriptwriter for Boy from Heaven (renamed Cairo Conspiracy for the US distribution and Oscar race). This is the second scriptwriting award for Saleh after his coveted win in Cannes.

The Netflix post-apocalyptic film Black Crab by Adam Berg starring Noomi Rapace came home with an impressive three Guldbagges for Best Cinematography, Best Set Design and Best Visual Effects, while the poetic Historja Stitches for Sápmi by Thomas Jackson won Best Documentary and Best Original Score.
The depiction of the Sámi people’s rich mythology, their relation to nature and political struggle, seen through artist Britta Marakatt-Labba’s work, had its world premiere at the last Göteborg Film Festival. The film was produced by B-Reel Films (BR.F), also credited for I am Zlatan.

The horror drama Feed by debut director Johannes Persson which sold 113,00 tickets in Sweden via Nordisk Film for an 8^th spot at the Top 10 Swedish films 2022, won the Audience Award.

Triangle of Sadness, Comedy Queen, I am Zlatan and Historja Stitches for Sapmi were all supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The Guldbagge Awards gala was hosted by Parisa Amiri and was broadcast live by SVT.
