Ragnar Bragason was the star of the 9th Icelandic Film and Television Awards ceremony or Edda Awards, held last Sunday at the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica Hotel, by winning six major statuettes for his film Parents (Foreldrar) and another two awards for his TV Drama The Nightshift (Næturvaktin).

Bragason's Parents made with Iceland's innovative theatre group Vesterpurt, won Best Film, Director, Script (co-written by the filmmaker with the whole cast), lead Actress (Nanna Kristin Magnusdottir), lead Actor (Ingvar E. Sigurdsson), Cinematography and Editing (Bergsteinn Björgúlfsson). The independent second part of a twin feature exploring the roles of children and parents in contemporary Reykjavik has been touring festivals successfully with the first feature film Children. Both films have been acquired by Øst for Paradis in Denmark and are sold internationally by London-based The Works.

Bragason's The Nightshift was awarded Best TV Drama of the Year, and was voted the Most Popular Television Show through televoting.

Three other films supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond were also awarded at last Sunday's Edda ceremony transmitted live on RUV. The thriller Cold Trail by Björn Br. Björnsson produced by Saga Film won two awards for Best Music (Gunnar Árnason) and Best Set Design (Árni Páll Jóhannsson); the documentary film At the Edge of the World (Syndir feðranna) by Ari Alexander Magnusson and Bergsteinn won in its category and the film The Quiet Storm (Veðramót) by Gudný Halldórsdóttir (one of the most successful Icelandic films of the year with over 16,000 admissions) won Best Supporting Actress (Jorundur Ragnarsson).
