Now among the most nominated films for the Golden Globes, Norway’s Sentimental Value continues its tremendous international success further into the awards season.
When the nominations for the Golden Globe Awards 2026 were announced on Monday December 8, Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value (Affeksjonsverdi) received nominations in eight categories, a record number by far for a Norwegian film.
Sentimental Value is nominated for both Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language. Trier also achieved a nomination for Best Director – Motion Picture, as well as a nomination for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture together with his regular screenwriting partner Eskil Vogt.
The film’s cast ended up with four Golden Globe nominations, with Renate Reinsve nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. In the supporting actor categories, both Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas are nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, and Stellan Skarsgård for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture.
Although Fanning and Lilleaas will compete with each other in the same category, this means that all the actors who have been perceived as potential candidates from the film received nominations in their respective categories.
Trier’s film collected the second highest number of nominations for the Golden Globes, only beaten by One Battle After Another. Paul Thomas Anderson’s film was handed nine nominations – one more than Sentimental Value. Following close behind the Norwegian feature is Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, with nominations in seven categories.
Sentimental Value is produced by Mer Film’s Maria Ekerhovd and Eye Eye Pictures’ Andrea Berentsen Ottmar, with Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany and the United Kingdom as co-producing countries. The film has received support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
Among other Nordic nominees is Swedish Ludwig Göransson, who is nominated for Best Original Score – Motion Picture for Sinners, as well as for Best Original Song – Motion Picture together with Raphael Saadiq for the song “I Lied to You” from the same film. The musician, composer, conductor, songwriter and record producer has previously won one Golden Globe, two Academy Awards, one BAFTA, two Emmys and four Grammy Awards, to mention just some of his many achievements.
For her role in Norwegian director Mona Fastvold’s British/American feature The Testament of Ann Lee, which premiered in the main competition at Venice, Amanda Seyfried received a nomination in the category Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy is the Finnish co-production Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie. The American feature written by Ronald Bronstein and Safdie is also nominated for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, as well as Timothée Chalamet being nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
After it won the prestigious Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes festival, Sentimental Value has been lauded with several awards and nominations. Not least, it is nominated in eight categories for the 38th European Film Awards as well, which is more than any other film this year – and again an all-time record for a Norwegian film.
Trier’s sixth feature is also considered one of the frontrunning contenders in several categories for the Academy Awards 2026.
As far as the Golden Globes can be viewed as Oscar predictions, it is perhaps worth noting that Trier’s previous film The Worst Person in the World (Verdens verste menneske), for which Renate Reinsve won the Best Actress Award in Cannes, did not receive any Golden Globe nominations in 2021. The film was nonetheless nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Original Screenplay as well as Best International Feature Film.
In fact, the only Norwegian film previously nominated for a Golden Globe Award is directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg’s Kon-Tiki, which was nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category in 2013 and went on to be nominated in the Academy Awards’ Foreign Language category. Needless to say, Sentimental Value’s frontrunner status for the Oscars is further strengthened by its numerous Golden Globe nominations.
Only three days before these nominations were shared with the public, Sentimental Value was nominated in seven categories for another North American awards ceremony, the 31st annual Critics Choice Awards, which were announced on December 5. These awards are presented by the Critics Choice Association, the largest film critics organisation in the United States and Canada. The winners will be revealed at a gala on January 4.
Also among the Norwegian film’s recent accolades in the US, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas was announced on December 3 as the winner of the award for Best Supporting Actress from the National Board of Review, as well as Sentimental Value being included at the same organisation’s non-ranked Top 5 International Films.
On December 7, her Swedish co-star Stellan Skarsgård was voted winner of the Best Supporting Performance prize in the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s awards, together with One Battle After Another’s Teyana Taylor as the female counterpart. In the same category, Lilleaas was highlighted as the female “runner-up”.
In the UK, Sentimental Value won the prize for Best International Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards on November 30. The film has also received several awards at international festivals after it premiered in Cannes.
On January 3, during the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Reinsve, Skarsgård, Lilleaas and Fanning will be honoured with the International Star Award at the annual The Palm Springs International Film Awards. This is the first time an ensemble cast receives the award.
