Both Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s documentary film and Joachim Trier’s relationships movie will be released in the US by Neon Distribution.

Flee has had a dazzling international career since its initial selection at Cannes’ online edition 2020 and world premiere screening at Sundance 2021 where it picked up the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize, first of a dozen international recognitions. The film is also running for the Nordic Council Film Prize, to be awarded November 2.

Two-time Academy-Award nominated producer Signe Byrge Sørensen (The Look of Silence, The Act of Killing) and her Final Cut for Real colleague Monica Hellström serve as producers, alongside Sun Creature Studio Denmark’s Charlotte de la Gournerie.

"Flee is the haunting and inventive story of a refugee and his journey. About the enormous price that people in his position pay every day, even in a safe haven,” said the Danish Film Institute’s CEO Claus Ladegaard, chairman of the Danish Oscar Committee. “Jonas Poher Rasmussen directs with tremendous empathy, and Amin’s story is hard to shake. The film’s finely balanced use of animation, music and live action gives us a real sense of the horror and cynicism of Amin’s journey to Europe, while not ignoring the beauty, humour and hope of his story,” he said.

The film was released in Denmark via Reel Pictures June 17, 2021. It will open in the US December 3rd. Cinephil handles sales.

Launched with a splash at the last Cannes Film Festival where Renate Reinsve was crowned Best Actress, The Worst Person in the World is Trier’s third Norwegian Oscar entry for Best International Feature after Thelma (2017) and Reprise (2006).

“We are ready to fight for a nomination…who knows where this could end up? said Trier. It's fun that Renate Reinsve has also been tipped for an Oscar for Best Female Lead by many American media,” he added.

The film about a young woman’s search for love and existential questioning has attracted more than 85,000 Norwegian and 100,000 French filmgoers so far. It opens in the US later this year. The Worst Person in the World was produced by Thomas Robsahm of Oslo Pictures.
