In its third weekend on screens, Mikal Hovland’s family film took the top of the film chart, ahead of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and The Hunger Games prequel.
Long live the Norwegian tradition of Christmas movies!
After less than three weeks on screens, Christmas at Cobbler Street (Den første julen i Skomakergata) by Mikal Hovland has sold 206, 624 tickets, making it the second biggest Norwegian film of the year after Narvik (334,000 in 2023), according to filmweb.no.
Last weekend the Nordisk Film release climbed from 2nd to 1st place at the Top 10, selling an extra 36,237 tickets from 156 screens. This compares to SF Norge’s Napoleon which opened at No 2, with 23,639 visitors from 148 screens and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes which dropped to 3rd place in its second weekend, with 18,495 admissions from 120 screens for Nordisk Film.
“It's absolutely fantastic that so many people have seen the film after only two weeks on screens”, said the film’s producer Sigurd Mikal Karoliussen of Nordisk Film Production Norway. “The response has been absolutely outstanding from both young and old, and as Advent is approaching, we hope that even more people will have a warm reunion with [shoemaker] Jens Petrus and the other beloved characters in Christmas on Cobbler Street!”
In the film, a few days before Christmas, 10- year-old Stine finds herself in a small town after stowing away on a train. Seeking shelter from the cold winter night, she sneaks into Shoemaker Jens Petrus Andersen’s house in Cobbler Street. The grumpy old man who cherishes his solitude, resists the presence of the funny, rude girl. However, their encounter ends up taking both of their lives in a new direction.
Next to Kåre Conradi who stars as the beloved shoemaker Andersen are Kaya Ekerholt McCurley as Stine, Lene Kongsvik Johansen as Tilla Hjul, Lisa Tønne as Mrs Franzen and Martin Lepperød as the postman.
The Christmas movie written by Maren Skolem (Beforeigners, Fenris) was produced by Karoliussen with Andrea Backstrøm. Sola Media handles world sales.
