The Annual Report summarises last year’s numbers and challenges, highlights and initiatives, and offers a glimpse of upcoming Nordic productions.
In 2024 Nordisk Film & TV Fond (NFTVF) allocated a total amount of NOK 147,701,616, granting top financing to 79 productions, in addition to distribution and/or dubbing support to 59 films and 22 industry initiatives.
Throughout the year, NFTVF continued to navigate an industry still under pressure from economic challenges and shifting viewing habits. As cinema ticket sales continue to decline and the era of Peak TV recedes, NFTVF has actively worked to sustain and develop strategic pan-Nordic initiatives to strengthen regional collaboration through various collaboration schemes. Through its talent labs and youth surveys, NFTVF has engaged with the younger Nordic generation, recognising the importance of their perspectives in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
The films and drama series supported in 2024 reflect an exciting shift in gender representation and a notable expansion of genres and formats. Among the applications aimed at adult audiences, we can look forward to productions by distinctive Nordic voices such as Tarik Saleh, Amanda Kernell, Joachim Trier, and Phie Ambo. Many fiction projects are inspired by real events, and genre films are strongly represented – often with a socially critical tone. Many documentaries in making address today’s urgent issues, such as climate change and ongoing conflicts.
In applications targeting children and youth, stories about friendship were the most common theme. Among the many fine NFTVF-supported C&Y productions that premiered in 2024, was the series Shut up (Oro Jaska), the first Sámi youth series produced in 30 years.
In 2024, more than 50 Nordic titles received awards around the world. NFTVF’s annual report highlights some of the supported award-winning titles, including the Danish The Girl with the Needle (Pigen med nålen), the Icelandic When The Light Breaks (Ljósbrot) and the Swedish Crossing (Passage). The winners of the big Nordic drama series and film prizes were productions by Norwegian Motlys. The creators of Power Play (Makta), Johan Fasting, Silje Storstein, and Kristin Grue, received the final Nordisk FIlm & TV Fond Prize, which has now been rebranded as Nordic Script Series Awards. Dag Johan Haugerud, Yngve Sæther, and Hege Hauf Hvattum won the Nordic Council Film Prize for Sex, the first part of the trilogy Sex Dreams Love (Sex Drømmer Kjærlighet).
At the annual Nordic Talents event in Copenhagen, the film Cold Response, pitched by director Ingvild Dahlgren from the Norwegian Film School, was awarded the Pitch Prize, while Atchy Konesh from the same school received the Special Mention for his series project Jordan.
