The Nordic drama series Dates in Real Life and Gaslight and the documentary A New Kind of Wilderness were awarded in Berlin.

Since 1987 an alliance of European public service companies has delivered the Prix Europa media prizes. Last Friday 32 European productions were awarded at the Prix Europa ceremony in Berlin in the competition’s current categories, which cover online, audio and video (former called TV) productions.

In 2024 up to 274 European media organisations submitted a total of 646 audio, digital media and video productions. After a pre-selection process, 161 productions from 27 countries took part in the competition. Out of nine awarded Nordic video titles, one is Swedish and two Norwegian. in audio and online categories Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian titles were awarded.

The fresh Norwegian series Dates in Real Life, written and directed by Jakob Rørvik and produced by Petter Onstad Løkke and Synnøve Hørsdal, was selected as the Best European Video Fiction Series of the Year 2024. The 7-part series deals with relationship problems in the age of virtual reality through animation and live-action. It is produced by Maipo for NRK and supported by NFTVF.

The Best Video Fiction Series award was delivered to the Swedish psychological drama series Gaslight. The series studies manipulation and destructiveness in a relationship. It’s written, directed and produced by Therese Lundberg. The production company Art & Bob Television is behind the series commissioned by SVT / Executive Producer Sanne Övermark.

The award for Best Documentary Film went to the Norwegian film A New Kind of Wilderness (Ukjent Landskap), written and directed by Silje Evensmo Jacobsen and produced by Mari Bakke Riise. The film follows how a family that leads a self-suffient life in the forest finds strength to continue after tragedy has hit. It is produced by A5 Film for NRK.

The Nordics are also strongly represented among the awarded audio productions at this year’s Prix Europa. DR’s audio documentary The Obsession: A War Story won Best Audio Documentary, and Swedish radio took home two awards; Best Audio Investigation for the audio documentary The Agents and Best Audio Fiction for the audio series Mio, My Son. NRK’s podcast series The Pianist (Pianisten) was awarded for the Best Music Programme.

Two Nordic digital media projects were also celebrated; 44.000 Shades of Gray – AI-mapping of Norways Nature Loss (Norge I Rodt, Hvitt og Gratt) by NRK was honoured as Best Online Media Project and YLE’s Mystery Train - An Escape Game on Tracks (Mysteerijuna - Pakopeli Raiteilla) won Best Online Youth Project.
