"It is great to see that out of 48 films selected for the EFA nominations, nine are Nordic films. This means that close to 20% of all selected films come from the Nordic region with a total population of no more than 25 million. It proves our high quality of filmmaking. I am proud that all selected Nordic films have been supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond," says the Fund's CEO Hanne Palmquist.
Denmark is represented by Lars von Trier's Antichrist (also selected for the Nordic Council Film Prize 2009), Ruben Genz's Terribly Happy and Annette K. Olesen's Little Soldier. Sweden has three candidates in Thomas Alfredson's Let the Right One In, Niels Arden Oplev's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Jan Troell's Everlasting Moments.
Norway is running with its local blockbuster Max Manus co-directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning, and Rune Denstad Langlo's feature debut Nord. Finally Finland is represented by Aku Louhimies' Tears of April (Käsky).
A total of 48 films from 25 countries have been shortlisted by the European Film Academy and EFA Productions for the EFA nominations, including the Bulgarian film Eastern Plays, coproduced by Sweden's Chimney Pot, and Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire.
Sweden's Let the Right One In and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo have also been selected with eight other European films for the EFA People's Choice Award.
The EFA nominations will be announced on November 7 at the Sevilla European Film Festival in Spain and the 22nd EFA ceremony will take place on December 12 in Germany's Ruhr Metropolis.
