Many new names on both sides of the camera have landed nominations for this year’s Swedish ‘Guldbagge’ film awards.

Toplining the list with most nods is the striking debut of Nathalie Álvares Mesén Clara Sola (Hobab Film), competing in 9 categories including Best Film.

Other contenders for film of the year include Ninja Thyberg’s Pleasure, Erik Poppe’s upcoming The Emigrants, Ronnie Sandahl’s Swedish Oscar entry Tigers, and the documentary The Most Beautiful Boy in the World by Kristian Petri and Kristina Lindström.

In a sign of generational shift, three out of four directors nominated in their category are first-timers: Nathalie Álvarez Mesén, Gorki Glaser-Müller (Children of the Enemy) and Ninja Thyberg, while Ronnie Sandahl is selected with his sophomore film Tigers.

Creative documentaries are also well represented across different sections, with The Most Beautiful Boy in the World vying for Best Film, Documentary, Editing, Sound and Original Score, Sabaya for Best Documentary and Script, Children of the Enemy for Best Documentary, Director and Original Score and The Choir for Best Cinematography. Meanwhile Denmark’s multi-awarded Flee is running for Best International Feature.

In another trend, Netflix enters the Guldbagge competition with the youth romance JJ+E running for Best Actor (Mustapha Aarab), Best Supporting Actors (Magnus Krepper, Jonay Pineda Skallak) and with the thriller Red Dot vying for Best Make-Up (Therese Sandersson).

Nordisk Film & TV Fond is associated to 27 Guldbagge nominations for the films Pleasure, Children of the Enemy, Sabaya, The Ape Star, The Choir, The Emigrants and The Most Beautiful Boy in the World.

The Guldbagge awards ceremony arranged by the Swedish Film Institute and SVT will be held onsite at Stockholm’s Cirkus on January 24, 2022, hosted by Gina Dirawi.
