Since its 2018 launch on Netflix, the post-apocalyptic suspense drama The Rain has turned into a global phenomenon. So far more than 30 million global fans have watched it, making it the biggest non-English language Netflix original series to date, according to a statement from Netflix. The show has performed strongly especially in Denmark, but also in Germany, Poland, France, Brazil, Mexico and the US.

The first season of 8 episodes premiered in May 2018 and the second season of 6 episodes kick started this May. The co-creators, writer Jannik Tai Mosholt (Borgen, Follow the Money), visual supervisor Esben Toft Jacobsen (The Great Bear), and producer Christian Potalivo (Dicte) are now working on another six episodes for the closing season.

Kelly Luegenbiehl, Netflix VP International Original Series in Europe, Middle East and Africa said: "The Rain has been a great adventure for us as it was our first Danish Original. Working with Christian, Jannik and Esben, in addition to the strong cast, has been a fantastic experience. Although Denmark already has a strong tradition of letting Danish-language content travel to the rest of the world, we were excited to see how the series caught so many Netflix members around the world as well as in Denmark.”

Peter Bose, co-founder of Miso Film said: “We are extremely proud that The Rain is the best performing non-English Original to date. Janni, Christian and Esben have created a series that targets the young audience and takes it by storm; that’s a great achievement, especially due to the fact that this is a genre that stands out from what we’ve produced in the past. This proves that the quality of Nordic storytelling is at its best.”

Potalivo and Mosholt said they “feel very privileged” to continue their good cooperation with Netflix. “We have always seen it as a story over three seasons and aim to give the characters in the show an intense journey during our last season, while giving the viewers the great finals they deserve and which we have always wanted to tell.”

Season 3 will pick up where season 2 ended, with actors Alba August (Simone), Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (Rasmus), Mikkel Boe Følsgaard (Martin), Sonny Lindberg (Jean), Lukas Løkken (Patrick), Clara Rosager (Sarah), Evin Ahmad (Kira), Nathalie Madueno (Fie) and others reprising their roles.

Bose told nordicfilmandtvnews.com: “We have worked very intensively on The Rain through three seasons. At some point, you also want to move on and renew yourself. We have had a great cooperation with Netflix, and together, we will now start to look into new projects and opportunities.”
