Documentaries

  • Breaking Social
    Grant: NOK 700,000
    Recipient: WG Film, Sweden
    Producer: Margarete Jangård
    Director: Fredrik Gertten
    Domestic distribution: TriArt, SVT
Logline: All societies are based on the idea of the social contract and meritocracy. The reward is supposed to come if we study, we work, we pay taxes. But it’s a lie, argues Gertten.

For his film, the director behind the acclaimed Bikes vs Cars and Big Boys Goes Bananas! has followed two main storytellers: Dutch historian Rutger Bregman “who carries a more philosophical hopeful layer, saying that we humans are born friendly, and want to cooperate. Then American writer Sarah Chayes who explains what we are up against: the structure of corruption and kleptocracy, extractivism that leaving nothing behind”.

“The film weaves between people pushing back, local struggles that we all can identify in,” says Gertten.

Breaking Social has received co-financing from Film I Skåne, NRK, VPRO, RTS, support from the Swedish Film Institute and Creative Europe. The premiere is set for the spring 2023.
  • Portrait of a Confused Father

Logline: A macho, middle-aged control freak father is trying to connect with his unruly son. It doesn’t go according to plan. We meet Gunnar, newly divorced after 20 year of traditional marriage, as he looks back and tries to figure out what the hell happened.

“Broadcasters look for strong stories which can resonate with a younger audience. The story of Gunnar and his lost and found son is gripping, funny, contemporary and very universal,” said Kim Christiansen, DR Sales’ executive producer.

The film co-produced by France’s Little Big Story, received co-financing from NRK, DR, SVT, YLE, BBC, RTS, and France Television, secured via French co-producer Little Big Story. The domestic premiere is slated for late 2023.
