UK distributor Revolver Entertainment had originally planned a limited release for Iron Sky followed by a May 23 DVD/Blu-Ray release. However after an active online campaign from the film's fan base and support from some UK exhibitors, such as the landmark Prince Charles Cinema in London, the film will continue to play at selected UK cinemas for as long as demand dictates.
"We have enormous belief in the potential of the film to become a cult classic in the vein of Rocky Horror and The Room and keep audiences flocking to the Prince Charles for many years to come", said Ben Freedman, owner of London's Prince Charles Cinema.
Iron Sky has now opened in 12 territories and has been seen by over 900,000 people worldwide, including 175,000 in Finland. Among the remaining countries set to release it theatrically is the US (Entertainment One).
On the heels of the film's international success, director Timo Vuorensola (pictured) has become partner in Blind Spot Pictures, founded in 1997 by Tero Kaukomaa. "Timo and I have worked six full years on Iron Sky. What I learnt from that experience is that we share similar marketing ideas. We embrace digital and future distribution models. I'm very happy that he's now a partner in Blind Spot and that we can implement our common strategy plan for the company" said Kaukomaa to nordiskfilmogtvfond.com.
Blind Spot has a full plate of new projects in various stages of production. Aside from a prequel and sequel to Iron Sky, Vuorensola will direct the English language I Killed Adolf Hitler about two hired guns from London who are sent back in time to kill Adolf Hitler. US writer DC Walker has written the screenplay based on Norwegian artist Jason's comic book. The co-production between Studio Eight Productions (UK), Finland (Blind Spot), Germany (Niama Films) will have a budget above the €7m of Iron Sky. The visual effects in 3D will be made by Troll VFX, the Tampere-based company formed around the Iron Sky team.
Blind Spot's other director in its roster AJ Annila (Sauna, Jade Warrior) is developing the survival thriller Human co-produced with Canada's Perfect Circle, represented worldwide by K5 International. The company is also wrapping Aku Louhimies' crime drama Never Forever set to open in Finland in February 2013.
Kaukomaa says the next step for his company is to further develop his platform WreckAMovie.com to make it more professional as a crowd- sourcing/crowd-funding filmmaking tool.
