Exclusive: Tulipop Studios and sales company Serious Kids will be pitching the new 13x7’ animated series at Annecy’s MIFA this week.
The joyful little creatures from the Tulipop universe created by illustrator Signý Kolbeinsdóttir are back for new adventures on screens.
After a successful launch in February on Iceland’s streamer Síminn of Tulipop Tales season one, backed by Nordisk Film & TV Fond, a second season entitled Adventures on Tulipop has been greenlit. Helga Árnadóttir, producer and co-founder of Tulipop Studios with Kolbeinsdóttir, says the new season has started production and is due to premiere early 2023.
Just like season 1, the returning season is produced by Tulipop Studios in partnership with leading Spanish animation studios Ánima and Birdland Animation, with support from the Icelandic Film Centre, private investors, tax rebates in Iceland and the Canary Islands. Besides Síminn, NRK and Yle have acquired the two seasons.
Árnadóttir described Tulipop Tales as “a modern day fairy-tale inspired by Icelandic folklore”. “It is set on the fantastical Tulipop island, which is loosely based on the landscapes of Iceland, containing waterfalls, rugged mountains, hot springs, and dense forests,” she explains. “Tulipop is home to five very different but equally lovable characters: Gloomy, an energetic, charismatic and curious mushroom girl; Bubble, her cautious, loyal and funny brother; Fred a naïve, playful and enthusiastic monster; Miss Maddy a confident, creative and fun monster bear and the wise Mr Tree.
Unburdened by traditional stereotypes - well, they are mushrooms, monsters and a tree! and able to freely explore who they are on a magical island not bound by society’s norms, and where nothing is what it seems, every day brings a new surprise to the islanders, and an opportunity for fun and friendship as they learn about their world and one another. “
Season 1 of the pre-school 2D animated series for 4-6 years-old, was written by head-writer Sara Daddy, with co-writers Gunnar Helgason, Davey Moore, Nanna Kristín Magnúsdóttir and Kolbeinsdóttir, with Sigvaldi J. Kárason directing.
Tulipop Studios and UK-based Serious Kids will be pitching the Tulipop series to world buyers at Annecy’s MIFA market (June 14-17) at one-to-one meetings.
