Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson’s feature debut topped this year’s Icelandic film and TV EDDA awards with nine wins including Best Film.

Guðmundsson also picked Best Director, Best Script, the film’s emerging talent Blær Hinriksson won Best Actor, the experienced Nína Dögg Filippusdóttir Best Supporting Actress, Sturla Brandth Grövlen Best Cinematographer, Hulda Helgadóttir Best Set Design and Helga Rós V. Hannam Best Costume Design, while Danish editing duo Anne Østerud and Janus Billeskov Jansen (The Commune) were handed out a Best Editing Edda for the film.

The Danish/Icelandic film produced by SF Studios Production and Join Motion Pictures has won more than 20 international awards since its world premiere at Venice Days last September.

Baltasar Kormákur’s thriller The Oath came second with six EDDAs for Best Actress (Hera Hilmarsdóttir), Supporting Actor (Gísli Örn Garðarsson), Special Effects (Pétur Karlsson and Daði Einarsson), Make-Up and Hair (Ragna Fossberg and Heimir Sverrisson), Sound Design (Huldar Freyr Arnarsson) and Musical Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir).

The film produced by RVK Studios with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond was the biggest hit of 2016 in Icelandic cinemas.

Other major awards went to Inside a Volcano: The Rise of Icelandic Football by Sævar Guðmundsson, Best Documentary film, Cubs by Nanna Kristín Magnúsdóttir, Best Short Film, Ligeglad created by Arnór Pálmi Arnarson, Best TV Fiction of the year, Trapped created by Baltasar Kormákur, Audience Award for Best TV Show.

The EDDA awards ceremony organised by the Icelandic Film & Television Academy was held on Sunday evening in Reykjavik.
