Flee made history as the first documentary to win in all four categories it was vying for, and Lisa Jespersen was the first ever debut female director to win best director.
The 38th Danish Film & TV Awards was a celebration of the vibrancy and diversity of local productions, despite the pandemic that halted or postponed many projects.
Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s Oscar contender Flee produced by Final Cut for Real, won Best Documentary, Editing, Sound Design and Score, a quadruple win made possible after the Danish Film Academy agreed last year to include documentary works in the technical categories. The update to Robert rules, also enabled Stroud Rohde Pearce to scoop Best Cinematography for his work on Jesper Dalsgaard’s documentary Kandis for Life.
Netflix’s acclaimed crime series The Chestnut Man created by Søren Sveistrup for Sam Productions, also won four Robert statuettes for Best Series, Actress (Danica Curcic), Supporting Actor (David Dencik) and Supporting Actress (Iben Dorner) in a series.
Up-and-coming female director Lisa Jespersen took home the heavy Best Film Prize, Best Director, and Original Screenplay (shared with Sara Isabella Jønsson) for her film Persona non Grata. The story of a young woman’s homecoming and confrontation with her family was produced by Hyæna Film.
Charlotte Sieling’s lavish epic historical drama Margrethe-Queen of the North produced by SF Studios, took home three Roberts as well for Best Supporting Actor (to the Norwegian Jakob Oftebro), Costume (Manon Rasmussen) and Set Design (Søren Schwarzberg).
Elsewhere, the biggest Danish film of 2021 - Anders Matthesen and Thorbjørn Christoffersen’s animated film Checkered Ninja 2 produced by A Film Production, Pop Up Production & Sudoku picked up Best Children & Youth Film and Best Adapted Screenplay, while seasoned actors Birthe Neumann and Simon Bennebjerg won in their respective categories for the leading roles in Bille August’s The Pact.
Eskil Vogt’s thriller The Innocents won Best Non-English Language Film.
Nordisk Film & TV Fond was associated to 12 Robert awards for the films Flee, Checkered Ninja 2, The Pact, Margrete-Queen of the North and The Innocents.
The Robert Awards ceremony was held Saturday at the Tivoli Hotel & Congress Centre in Copenhagen.
