The comprehensive report ‘Public Funders at a Crossroads’ provides recommendations for policymakers and public funders on how to engage with the new players and still be relevant.

The report published on Friday by the leading Nordic regional film fund Film i Väst, and presented at the European Co-Production Forum in Brussels, focuses on the future legitimacy and relevance of public film funds in Europe,- in particular selective public film funding, at a time when the traditional eco-system in Europe is being challenged by global streamers.

The report written mainly by Tomas Eskilsson, Film i Väst Head of Strategy, is based on more than 700 interviews with key stakeholders and professionals in the European audiovisual sector, on top of workshops and focus groups with 3,000+ industry members, who were asked to reflect on the current state of the industry and outline forecasts for 2025 and beyond.

“One of the conclusions that we have drawn is that there must be a smarter collaboration between the public and the private sectors, reconsider the role of the cinemas, as well as investigate in diversity and inclusion. It’s urgent to cut the bureaucracy and come to quicker decisions,” said Eskilsson.

Many of the issues raised in the report were mentioned last January at a panel organised by Nordisk Film & TV Fond - CLICK HERE.
