Nine months after scooping a Grand Prix in Cannes, Juho Kuosmanen’s film won eight national Jussis on Friday evening including Best Film and Best Director.

Other wins include Best Actress, Script, Cinematography, Editing, Set Design and Make Up.

The film was produced by Jussi Rantamäki and Emilia Haukka of Aamu Film Company.

Five years earlier, Kuosmanen, his producers and creative team picked up the same number of Jussi statuettes for the director’s first feature The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.

Khadar Ayderus Ahmed’s The Gravedigger’s Wife tied with Teemu Nikki’s The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic with two wins each. Nikki, his long-time production partner Jani Pösö of Alive Films, and cinematographer Sari Aaltonen also picked up the Nordisk Film Award worth €20,000, an accolade handed out to “filmmakers who enrich and develop Finnish cinema”.

Meanwhile the comedies Fucking with Nobody by Hannaleena Haru and 70 Is Just a Number by Johanna Vuoksenmaa, were bestowed one Jussi award each.

The environmental doc Invisible Demons by Rahul Jain won Best Documentary and the Elisa Viihde Audience Award went to Nurses-Dreadful Hospital Outrage, film spin-off of the hit series. The film was directed by Toni Laine for Yellow Film & TV.

The Lifetime Achievement Award Betoni-Jussi was handed out to actor Heikki Nousiainen (One Last Deal, Ladies of Steel, Letters to Father Jacob) whose career spans more than 50 years.

Another special award - ‘Vuoden uroteko’ or ‘Achievement of the Year’, celebrating a special initiative to improve the industry, went to the collective ‘Mitta on täysi’, that organised demonstrations during the pandemic to speak on behalf of the culture world. The €2,000 award sponsored by Aurora Studios, was donated to the Finnish Red Cross to help Ukraine.

Nordisk Film & TV Fond was associated to eight Jussi awards for Compartment No.6.

The Jussi awards ceremony overseen by the industry organisation Filmiaura, was transmitted live on MTV3 on Friday evening. This year marked the last time acting awards were given in gendered categories.
