Comet in Moominland is a revamped 4K version of the classic 1992 animated film created by director Hiroshi Saito, animator Yasuhiro Nakura and writer Akira Miyazaki, based on Tove Jansson’s eponymous book.
Seasoned filmmaker Antti J. Jokinen (Purge) and producer Sara Norberg of Cinematic are producing with Tim Livson (Kindernet Entertainment), son of Dennis Livson who produced the original feature.
The creative team includes sound directors Marlus Bäckman and Carla Rindell, who have cast for the Finnish voices Cark-Kristian Rundman (Deadwind, The Paradise), Joonathan Kettunen (The Magic Crystal), Jarmo Koski (Secret Lives), Kristiina Halttu (Bordertown, Syke).
Actors for the voices in the Swedish version include Alama Pÿysti (Tove), Christoffer Sttrandberg (Putous), Maria Sid (Before We Die, All the Sins), Rundman and Finnish rapper Redrama.
In the film we follow the young Moomintroll and Sniff who set out to stop a comet approaching the Moomin valley. Along the way they meet Snufkin, the beautiful Snorkmaiden and her brother Snorken. The film deals with topical issues such as catastrophes and natural disasters endangering the planet, with characters able to overcome the challenges thanks to friendship and heroism, themes typical of Tove Jansson’s literary work.
“One of the great things about the film is that it’s suitable for kids of all ages and it has plenty to give to adults as well. Brilliant Tove Jansson has constructed the story and characters so ingeniously that every viewer finds something of their own in the film, regardless of age,” said Antti J. Jokinen.
The film is scheduled for cinema release in Finland late summer via SF Studios. The premiere will coincide with the Moomins’ 75th anniversary.
C More and MTV have acquired streaming rights for Finland.
