The thriller produced by B-Reel Films is the frontrunner at Sweden’s annual TV awards with 5 nominations, ahead of Netflix’s Young Royals with its 4 nominations.
The Congregation (Knutby) directed by Goran Kapetanović is among five shows running for best drama series. Other nominees are Yellow Bird’s crime show The Truth Will Out (Det som göms i snö) ordered by Viaplay, FLX’s comedy The Bonus Family (Bonusfamiljen) produced for SVT and crime drama The Dark Heart, produced for Kanal5/Discovery, as well as Nexiko’s comedy Dough which premiered on SVT.
In the acting categories, The Congregation also scores with four chances to win for its top actors Alba August, Aliette Opheim, Einar Bredenfeldt, and supporting actress Klara Hodell.
One of the most hotly disputed categories will be Best Actor, with Bill Skarsgård (Clark, Netflix) Edvin Rydin (Young Royals, Netflix), Mattias Nordkvist (Suburbia/(Vi i villa, Kanal5/Discovery) running against Bredenfeldt and Robert Gustafsson (The Truth Will Out). The latter swooped the male award in 2019 with the series’ first season.
FLX’s Suburbia, which was nominated for a Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize-Best Nordic Screenplay earlier this year, is also running for Best Comedy.
The youth audience being a top priority for streamers and broadcasters’ alike in their fierce ratings battle, several quality shows eyeing that age group have been selected for different categories.
C More has both Baluba’s Heartbeats running for Best Actress (Nora Rioas) and Youth Series, and FLX’s Likea in the Comedy section.
SVT’s All that Remains (Allt som blir kvar) produced by Baluba gets an accolade for its main actress Madeleine Ferraud, while its successful teen brand Eagles from New Stories, is among the five youth series contenders, including as well Viaplay’s romance Threesome (Yellow Bird), and UR Play’s school drama Dör för dig.
In the Kids programme category, C More and SVT get two nods each, with JerryMaja’s Detective Agency and Wild Kids representing Telia’s streamer, Lilla Aktuellt and Strula the Swedish pubcaster.
Documentaries competing for top honours include the Sundance-selected The Most Beautiful Boy in the World (SVT).
Some of the broadcasters and streamers with the most nominations were fast to react.
C More/TV4 Media’ Nordic Head of Drama Piodor Gustafsson said: “I’m very happy for the nominations. Many talented people have worked hard to improve our slate and we celebrate with them. Knutby is a masterpiece. It's so difficult to find a balance between the melodramatic reality and dramatised fictional version of the same. Goran and the three leads made it in every little detail. Very impressive. We are also very happy that our young adult series, Heartbeats and Likea were recognised. High quality with very limited resources. Also very impressive!” he said.
Lena Strandner, Director of Programming at Warner Bros. Discovery and Filippa Wallestam, EVP-Chief Content Officer at Viaplay, both underlined the breath and quality of their programmes, that totalled 14 and 12 nominations respectively.
The Kristallen awards ceremony will be held September 1st at Stockholm’s Cirkus and transmitted live on TV4 and TV4 Play. A total of 22 prizes will be handed out.
