The Wife’s director is attached to the Swedish film about a passionate and secret love affair, based on Alex Schulman’s eponymous novel.

Burn All My Letters (Bränn alla mina brev) is a semi-autobiographical novel published in 2018 by famous Swedish podcaster and writer Schulman.
In the novel, Shulman tells the story of his own grandmother Karin Stolpe, who had a secret love affair during her youth in the early 1930s, with a young writer Olof Lagercrantz, while married to a high profile author -Sven Stolpe- whom she feared.

In his search for answers in the present, about what really happened at the time and about his own demons, Schulman is reminded of a pivotal moment in his childhood, in 1988, when he stumbled upon a pile of letters that sent shockwaves through the household. Did the love between Karin and Olof not end in 1932, as Sven had long believed? And what really happened in the horrible car accident that nearly cost Karin and Sven their lives?
The novel Burn All My Letters tells what could have been, but also about life as it came to pass, weaving together three perspectives into a story of love and tragedy that overrides both time and space.

Runge who will collaborate with Schulman on the screen adaptation said: “For me, this is a passion drama. A blossoming love affair that has unintended consequences. What attracts me is the opportunity to have people who in different ways, at different times, relate to an emotional trauma, a fire no one tried to get control of, until now. In this drama that moves between different times, the momentary deceit evolves into the backbone of the story. A perfect starting point for me as a director.”

Annika Sucksdorff, Head of Film Production Sweden at SF Studios, and producer of the film said: “I think Schulman is one of the strongest writers of our time. The competition for the filmmaking rights for this book was fierce and I am incredibly pleased that we will be able to turn this amazing love story into a film.”

Burn All My Letters is part of SF Studios’ push into high quality local content for an international audience.

Runge whose English language debut film The Wife earned Glenn Close a Golden Globe for Best Actress, is also attached to the US sci-fi project Stardream and period drama Remember Me
