The veteran directors’ respective films A Fortunate Man and The House that Jack Built have each 16 and 12 nominations for the 35th Danish film and TV awards.
The two films produced respectively by Nordisk Film Production and Zentropa are competing in ten categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Esben Smed for A Fortunate Man and Matt Dillon for The House…).
Some crew members are nominated for both films such costume designer Manon Rasmussen, and make up designer Dennis Knudsen (co-nominated with Tina Helmark on A Fortunate Man).
Denmark’s top grossing film of 2018, Zentropa’s The Purity of Vengeance directed by Christoffer Boe shares the third most nominations (11) with Nordisk Film’s comedy Ditte & Louise by Niclas Bendixen, both running notably for Best Film. Gustav Möller’s Sundance winner and Oscar-short-listed The Guilty has nine nominations including for Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay and Actor (Jakob Cedergren).
Another fast-rising newcomer, Swedish-born Isabella Eklöf who made headlines all through 2018 as co-writer of Border and writer/director of her Danish debut Holiday, scoops seven Robert nominations for the latter film. She is the only woman running for Best Director.
Her female colleague Patrika Steen shares the same number of Robert nominations for her film That Time of Year, fifth biggest Danish film of 2018. With her film about a family’s conflictual relationships crystallised during Christmas, Steen gets her fifth opportunity to win Best Actress.
In the male category, Norway’s Baard Owe (O’Horten) is running for Best Actor against Matt, Dillon, Esben Smed (A Fortunate Man), Rasmus Bjerg (The Way to Mandalay) and Jakob Cedergren. Owe is the first actor in the history of the Danish Film Academy who gets a posthumous Best Actor nomination.
In the Children and Youth Film category, the current box office hit Checkered Ninja by Anders Matthesen & Thorbjørn Christoffersen (nearly 330,000 admissions) scoops five nomination including Best Children & Youth Film.
In the documentary section are Bobbi Jene by Elvora Lind, Distant Barking of Dogs by Simon Lereng Wilmont, The Night We Fell by Cille Hannibal, The Return by Malene Choi Jensen and The Two of Us by Emil Næsby Hansen.
The Swedish film Border is vying for Best non-English language film, with Burning, Cold War, Roma and Shoplifters.
Mirroring the booming activity in the TV drama sector, this year’s nominees in Best TV series and Best Short TV series are twice as numerous as the previous year. Ride Upon the Storm season 2 leads with six nominations, followed by Liberty, The Bridge season 4 and Warrior with four nominations each.
Talents nominated both in film and TV drama are writer/director Christoffer Boe, who cumulates 15 Robert nominations including Best Film for The Purity of Vengeance and Best TV drama for Warrior, as well as actress Sofie Gråbøl, vying for supporting roles in the film That Time of Year and in the TV series Liberty.
The Danish Film Academy ‘s Robert awards ceremony will take place in Copenhagen on Sunday February 3, 2019.
