Nearly 20 Nordic documentaries are screening at Toronto’s 20th Hot Docs Film Festival - one of the most important documentary showcases after IDFA - unspooling since April 25 until May 5. Denmark has the strongest presence with nine films in various sections including the International Spectrum competition entries Ballerina by Maja Friis focusing on Sweden’s world famous ballet dancer Elsa Marianne von Rosen, and Just the Right Amount of Violence by veteran filmmaker Jon Bang Carlsen capturing families in crisis. Finland’s Aatsinki: the Story of Arctic Cowboys which just screened in Tribeca, is also running in this competition section. The Danish films Free the Mind, Mercy, Mercy-a portrait of True Adoption and The Expedition to the End of the World supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond are screening at the World Showcase sidebar and Simon Klose’s Swedish TPK AFB: The Pirate Bay Away from Keyboard is shown in the Rule Breakers & Innovators Programme.
