After Scandinavia where the film has been seen by over 2.6 million people, the first Millennium film has opened successfully in five European -non-Scandinavian- territories and has been sold to another five countries by Zodiak Entertainment. The Yellow Bird production supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond is well on its way to become the biggest international box office hit ever for a Swedish film.

In France where it is playing on 554 screens, Niels Arden Oplev's Män som hatar kvinnor (aka The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) has sold around 850,000 tickets since May 13 and was number four in the Top Ten last week. Italy and Spain opened strongly as well on May 29. In Spain, the film had the second best opening weekend and was second at the Top ten last weekend with 220,000 tickets sold. In Italy, the film was third with 150,000 admissions.

The new territories that acquired the film include the UK (Momentum), Australia (Rialto), Greece (Rosebud), Mexico (Gussi) and Argentina (Clardin). "It is very rare for a non-English speaking film to obtain this kind of extensive international distribution. We are very pleased that our adaptations of Stieg Larsson's fantastic books have so much appeal to buyers all over the world," commented Mikael Wallén, managing director of Yellow Bird.

Millennium 2, The Girl Who Played with Fire, will open simultaneously in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark through Nordisk Film on September 18 and a week later in Finland. The third book adaptation The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest will hit screens on November 27 in Sweden, Norway and Denmark and in January 2010 in Finland.
