The favourite at Iceland?s 2012 annual film awards, Runár Rúnarsson?s Volcano turned five of its 14 nominations into Edda awards last Saturday in Reykjavik, winning in the top categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Script, Best Leading Actor (Theodor Júlíusson), and Best Actress (Margrét Helga Jóhannsdóttir). The ZikZak Filmworks production was supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

Volcano had started its career by winning a Special Mention at Copenhagen‘s Nordic Talents 2009. The drama had its world premiere at Cannes‘ Directors Fortnight 2011 and was Iceland‘s Entry for this year‘s Academy Awards nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. The secong biggest winner at last Saturday‘s Edda awards ceremony was Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson‘s Either Way which picked three statuettes for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Thorsteinn Bachmann), Best DoP (Árni Filippusson) and Best Costume Designers (Margrét Einarsdóttir and Eva Vala Guðjónsdóttir).

Next with two Eddas each were the 3D animation film Legends of Valhalla-Thor (Best Editor and Best Production Designer) and Magnús Vidar Sigurdsson‘s Last Days of the Arctic (Best Documentary and Best Music). Other winners were María Heba Thorkelsdóttir, Best Supporting Actress for My Own Oslo, and Gunnar Árnason, Best Sound Designer for City State.

Last year‘s biggest Icelandic hit, the family film The Magic Wardrobe by Bragi Thor Hinriksson won an Edda for Best Children‘s film and the second season of the crime series The Press won Best Scripted TV series. Nordisk Film & TV Fond was associated to nine Edda awards.
