The Nordic streamer’s access to the UK market will bring its global footprint to 11 countries, with the US and Canada set to follow in 2023.

Viaplay will be offering two packages to UK viewers:

  • the ‘Film & Series’ package priced at £3.99 per month, focusing on Nordic storytelling, including the Viaplay Originals and third-party acquisitions;
  • the ‘Total Package’ priced at £14.99 per month, also including a wide range of sports content through Viaplay’s own UK sports line-up, and the recently acquired UK streamer and TV channel operator ‘Premier Sports’.

Anders Jensen, Viaplay Group President and CEO said: “Viaplay will offer UK viewers a compelling combination of live sports, world-class drama and superior value for money. We are launching in this dynamic and exciting market with high ambitions and a long-term perspective, and acquiring Premier Sports will significantly accelerate our entry. Viaplay has so much to offer, and local sports fans as well as devotees of premium Nordic and international storytelling can now try our unique service for themselves, starting 1 November.”

Viaplay is currently available as a direct-to-consumer (DTC) service in all Nordic and Baltic countries, Poland and the Netherlands. It is also available through Comcast in the US, with a DTC launch in both the US and Canada set for early 2023. The Viaplay Select branded content concept landed in Japan in April through WOWOW, and it will arrive in November in nine Latin American countries via DMD’s CINDIE streaming service.

One of the leading producers of original content in the Nordics, Viaplay is due to premiere at least 70 Originals in 2022. According to the streamer, further details of the series and films available on Viaplay UK will be announced shortly.

So far two major English-language films are being produced annually by Viaplay on top of local originals; the group also has a UK-based joint venture with FilmNation Entertainment and a stake in US studio Picturestart.

Viaplay’s own global distribution arm Viaplay Content Distribution is represented this week at Mipcom Cannes.
