The eight-part series is based on the bestselling novels by Swedish media celebrities Hannah Widell and Amanda Schulman.
The two high-profile personalities and sisters in real life, Hanna Widell and Amanda Schulman, enjoy a massive fan base with their podcast ‘Fredadgspodden’, where they discuss very openly, with wit and humour, their lives and relationships among others.
The series is freely based on their trilogy books about sisterhood ‘Two Sisters’, for the first time brought to the screen by IP specialist production house Yellow Bird. Alexia Wennberg, Cecilia Forsberg and Georgie Mathew are producing.
Two Sisters which starts filming this week in Stockholm, is created by rising filmmaker Julia Lindström (Hjerteslag) and writer Amy Black Ndiaye (Aber Bergen) who both graduated from the Norwegian Film School and attended Nordic Talents in 2016.
The TV series explores the diverging lives of young Stockholm siblings Alicia and Vanessa as they climb the career ladder, fall in love and realise that growing up can also mean growing apart.
In the title roles as Alicia is Dilan Gwyn (Love Me) and Julia Ragnarsson (Spring Tide, Blinded, Midsummer) plays Vanessa.
Describing the two central protagonists in their books, Hannah Widell said: “Alicia and Vanessa are two characters who are very close to us, and since the first page was written, we have fantasised about seeing all the love, blackness and anxiety come to life in a TV drama. We are therefore incredibly happy and grateful for this series, it is a dream come true.”
Her sister Amanda Schulman adds: “To see how these fantastic actors interpret the book's strong personalities will be incredibly exciting and we are so humbled and happy about the magic that the whole team is injecting in this [adaptation] right now.”
Dilan Gwyn says she was attracted by the central idea of sisterhood, something that “has not been explored much in Swedish drama production”. “When I met director Julia Lindström, I was so hooked because she thinks outside the box and has a strong vision. This will be a series I myself look forward to seeing,” she noted.
Julia Ragnarsson said she had read the books and looks forward to playing Vanessa. “This is a role far from those I’ve played earlier,” she said. “Two Sisters feels modern and fun, with a small tight ensemble cast. It's super exciting to work with a female director and that the script is written by a woman, based on books written by two strong women. It is a privilege to work on such projects."
Filippa Wallestam, NENT Group Chief Content Officer said she is expecting “huge interest” in the series, considering the huge fan reach of Hannah Widell and Amanda Schulman with their 200,000+ Instagram followers. “Two Sisters blends light and darkness while asking just how far we are responsible for those we love. This is a sharp and relevant story told by some of the Nordic region’s most talented female creators, both in front of and behind the camera,” she said.
The series will premiere exclusively on NENT Group’s Viaplay streaming service across the Nordic and Baltic regions in 2021.
