Selected for the main competition in Cannes are Eagles of the Republic by Swedish Tarik Saleh and Sentimental Value by Norwegian Joachim Trier, both supported by NFTVF.
The Official Selection for the 78th Festival de Cannes (May 13-24) was announced today by the festival director Thierry Frémaux in UGC Montparnasse cinema in Paris. Among the 18 films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or are two remarkable Nordic titles; Eagles of the Republic by Swedish Tarik Saleh, and Sentimental Value (Affeksjonsverdi) by Norwegian Joachim Trier. Both films are supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
Eagles of the Republic, written and directed by Tarik Saleh and produced by Unlimited Stories, is the third part of his Egypt triology, following Sundance-awarded The Nile Hilton Incident (2017) and the Cannes-acclaimed Boy from Heaven(Walad min al janna, 2023). The film portrays how Egypt is being driven toward a totalitarian regime and how the film industry is subjected to strict censorship. The main character, played by Fares Fares, is a popular actor whose art is threatened by those in power.
Sentimental Value, written and directed by Joachim Trier with Eskil Vogt as co-writer, and produced by Mer Film, is a story rooted in a family trauma that impacts generations of artists. It focuses on the relationship between a film director and his actor daughter. It explores family, memories, and the reconciliatory power of art. Renate Reinsve, who won the Best Actress award at Cannes in 2021 for Trier’s film The Worst Person in the World (Verdens verste menneske), and Stellan Skarsgård will star in the leading roles.
The Official Selection for the 8th edition of Canneseries (April 24-29) features seven Nordic titles. Drama series competing in the Long Form Competition are Norwegian-Lithuanian A Better Man (Ølhunden Berit), Finnish L/over, Norwegian Nepobaby, and Icelandic Reykjavik Fusion. The Short Form Competition includes Dorm No. 13 (Tupa 13) from Finland and Rebound from Norway. Meanwhile the Docuseries category features The Agent – The Life and Lies of My Father (Agenten - pappas liv og løgner), from Norway.
