The Swedish psychological drama produced by Filmlance International with backing from Nordisk Film & TV Fond premiered February 3rd on SVT.

Sneak-previewed at last week’s TV Drama Vision in Göteborg, the three-part series Tsunami is directed by the experienced Henrik Georgsson (Marcella, The Bridge), based on an original idea and script by Sara Kadefors (Sandor Slash Ida).

The drama is set during a few intense days in Stockholm, with the 2004 tsunami disaster as background. The central character is Tomas, head of an aid organisation, suspected of fraud, who goes missing in the tsunami off the coast in Thailand.

Kadefors said: “All disasters certainly have the power to shake those we love, but it can also raise questions about what choices we make in life. In Tsunami, we try to ask questions about what responsibility you have as a person and what is really important. Why do we often do things that we know are not right? We wanted to do something deeply emotional and at the same time uncomfortable, with a sense of boldness and urgency.”

SVT’s head of Drama Anna Croneman says Kadefors raises the question of “why we sometimes do things that violate our morals? For her the series is “thrilling, moving and appealing,” and it shows “how we behave when existence is at its forefront."

Headlining the series are Henrik Norlén (Beck, Modus, Johan Falk), Louise Peterhoff (The Bridge, Blue Eyes), Fredrik Lycke (Jordskott), Liv Mjönes (Midsommar, Sthlm Requiem), Thure Lindhardt (The Bridge, The Last Kingdom), and Evin Ahmad (Beck, Blue Eyes).

The series was produced by Anders Landström of Endemol Shine Group's Swedish brand Filmlance International, in co-production with SVT, Film i Skåne and support from the Fund.

The Swedish pubcaster launched one episode on SVT1 February 3rd, and the entire series simultaneously on its streaming service SVT Play.

Tsunami follows up on SVT’s high-end drama Caliphate - Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize 2020 nominee - which premiered January 12 and has since been topping SVT’s VOD platform.

Other series on TrustNordisk’s slate include NRK’s crime drama Twin (sold to more than 30 territories) and C More/TV4’s hit series A Wedding, Funeral and a Christening.
