A third season is in advanced discussions. Three years in the waiting, the second season of Iceland’s crime show Trapped (Ófærð) scored again with fans of Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as detective Andri.
The series premiered on December 26, 2018 and ended up with a share on RÚV’s Sunday prime time evening slot of 89% and total reach for the entire season was 77.9% according to Iceland’s pubcaster RÚV.
On top of massive live ratings, the series set new records for catch up /non-linear viewing, becoming the most watched title within 24 hours, after 7 days and also after 30 days.
RÚV’s director of programming and commissioning editor Skarphedinn Gudmundsson told nordicfilmandtvnews.com: “We are extremely pleased with the ratings and general reception. Season 2 turned out to be just as big an TV event as season 1, if not bigger, where you had almost everyone you met, holding their breath, discussing and debating the storyline, the plot and the big "whodunnit". I'm not sure our business realises how valuable and rare this has become-enjoying such a massive universal "live" engagement", now that so many of us are watching dramas in our own corners, in our own time. Therefore our general approach to the scheduling has been more aligned to how we've approached big live events rather than your average linear drama scheduling, with great success. Our biggest dramas have become the biggest live TV events, which is great!”
Gudmundsson said discussions are underway with Kormákur‘s production company RKV Studios to make a third season. “We would love for that to happen, hopefully sooner than later,” he said.
Kormákur confirmed to nordicfilmandtvnews.com that a new season is in development. “We said right from the beginning that we would like to do three seasons. We were waiting for viewers’ response, and now that it’s been a huge hit on RÚV, it looks likely that it will happen.”
In Trapped season 2 Ólafur Darri Ólafsson stars again as detective Andri who investigated a series of chilling murders in a remote town in Northern Iceland, with his colleagues Hinrika (Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir) and Ásgeir (Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson). Season 2 is co-produced by Dynamic Television, RÚV, ZDF and ZDF Enterprises, in collaboration with France Televisions, SVT, NRK and DR among others. The series aired on BBC Four last month and is currently playing on France Television.
Upcoming Icelandic shows commissioned by RÚV include Happily Never After, described by Gudmundsson as “an über-realistic comedy-drama" about the downs and ups of a forty-something recently divorced woman, and the Nordic noir Valhalla Murders co-produced by Netflix.
