Smirnoff’s trilogy featuring the female character Jana Kippo, has sold more than half a million copies in Sweden and was translated into several languages including in English.

“Karin Smirnoff is one of the most interesting Swedish authors around and we are incredibly proud to be working on what is sure to be a powerful, world-class television production,” said Filmlance’s CEO Hanne Palmquist.

Set in the fictional village of Smalånger, the story follows Jana Kippo who returns to her family village and moves into her childhood home to get her alcoholic twin brother’s life in order. The pair have a common childhood trauma and a death in the village takes a heavy toll. Maria was found dead in a forest glade and no one knows what happened. The longer Jana stays in her home village, the more she gets to know about both Maria and herself.

“This unique story of love, betrayal, revenge and lust contains everything needed to create a gripping, exciting and constantly surprising drama,” added Palmquist.

Producers Anna Wallmark, Teresa Alldén and Olof Spaak who collaborated on C More/TV4’s thriller drama Top Dog, will serve as producers.

The Nordic streamer is currently playing Filmlance’s successful crime brand Beck, starring Peter Haber, Kristofer Hivju and Jennie Silfverhjelm. The second of four films will premiere December 4.

Meanwhile Filmlance’s feature film Spring Uje Spring which won the Audience and FIPRESCI Awards at the last Göteborg Film Festival is set to open in Sweden December 18 via TriArt.
