The debut feature by French Morgane Dziurla-Petit is among two features backed by the SFI’s Moving Sweden scheme, awarded in Rotterdam, alongside the project Love #NoFilter.

A spin-off of her acclaimed short film of the same name, Excess Will Save You is a hybrid tragicomedy in which inhabitants of a small French village find themselves on a high risk-alert, after a woman mistakenly confuses a pigeon hunt with a terrorist attack, when she thinks she hears ‘Allah Akbar’ from the screams of two Polish drunken workers.

The Rotterdam Film Festival Tiger Special competition jury said:
“This is a real debut film, unique in every possible way, full of ideas and crazy storytelling, proving that hybrid filmmaking can be hilarious and also reach audiences. It is a very generous film, bridging the gap between several worlds. Actors and non-actors, the past, the present and the future. It is a village v.s. the world with all its current issues…. The film is funny, extremely moving and always original.”

Excess will Save Us was produced by Fredrik Lange of Vilda Bomben Film, in co-production with Film i Väst, support from the SFI and SVT’s joint Moving Sweden scheme for rising talents. The film is vying for the Dragon Award-Best Nordic Film at this week’s Göteborg Film Festival. Folkets Bio will release it in Sweden April 1st, 2022. World sales are handled by Cinephil.

Meanwhile another film backed by Moving Sweden, picked up an award from the IFFR Pro industry sidebar. The project Love #No Filter by Mikael Bundsen, produced by Kjellson & Wik brought home a Special Mention from the Eurimages Co-production Development Award. Bundsen is a graduate from Göteborg’s Valand Academy of Fine Arts.
