On November 5, the European Film Academy revealed the nominees for the main categories of the 37th European Film Awards.
The Palestinian/Norwegian feature documentary No Other Land, produced by Fabien Greenberg and Bård Kjøge Rønning from Norway’s Antipode Films, is nominated for the top award for best European Film, as well as for best European Documentary. The film is directed and also produced by Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal, a Palestinian-Israeli collective of activists and filmmakers, and depicts the eradication of Palestinian villages by Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank’s Masafer Yatta area.
With the recently introduced new regulation, the films in the European Documentary and European Animated Feature Film categories are also eligible for the European Film category.
With Norway’s Renate Reinsve competing for the European Actress award for her role in Armand as well as both Trine Dyrholm and Vic Carmen Sonne from Denmark for The Girl with the Needle (Pigen med nålen), three out of five nominees in the category represent the Nordics. They are nominated together with Karla Sofía Gascón in Emilia Pérez and Tilda Swinton in The Room Next Door.
The Girl with the Needle is also nominated in the European Screenwriter category, together with Emilia Pérez, The Room Next Door, The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Dane-ye anjir-e ma’abed), and The Substance. The screenplay for the Danish/Polish/Swedish film is written by director Magnus von Horn and Line Langebek.
Furthermore, Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel‘s Armand (Norway/Netherlands/Germany/Sweden) is nominated for the European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI award. The prize is awarded a director for his/her first full-length feature film, and is presented by the European Film Academy in co-operation with the International Federation of Film Critics, FIPRESCI. A committee composed of FIPRESCI members and experts appointed by the European Film Academy decides upon the nominated productions.
Armand is also nominated for the European University Film Award, which was announced by the European Film Academy and FILMFEST HAMBURG on October 23. The award is presented by university students from across Europe, with five nominated films based on the European Film Awards Feature and Documentary Film Selections 2024.
Armand is produced by Andrea Berentsen Ottmar for the Norwegian company Eye Eye Pictures, in co-production with Keplerfilm, One Two Films, Prolaps Produktion, and Film i Väst. The Girl with the Needle is produced by Malene Blenkov and Mariusz Włodarski for Nordisk Film Production in Denmark, with Lava Films, EC1 ŁÓDŹ, Lower Silesia Film Centre, Film i Väst and Nordisk Film Sweden as co-producing companies, and has received support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
Last, but not least: Two Norwegian films, one of them a Danish co-production, are among the three nominated features for the European Young Audience Award. These are Lars is LOL (Lars er LOL), directed by Eirik Sæter Stordahl, and Benjamin Ree‘s The Remarkable Life of Ibelin (Ibelin). The third nominated film in this category is the German film Winners (Sieger Sein) by director Soleen Yusef. Despite the latter feature’s title, it remains to be seen which film wins when up to 99 young people from all over Europe now will vote for their favourite.
Lars Is LOL (Norway/Denmark) is produced by Caroline Hitland and co-produced by Matilda Appelin for Nordisk Film Production. The Remarkable Life of Ibelin (Norway) is produced by Ingvil Giske for Medieoperatørene.
The nominations for the European Film Awards 2024 are based on the votes of 5,000 members of the European Film Academy, who have been watching the films included in the Academy Selection. The Academy members will now vote for the winners.
The winners will be revealed in this year’s award ceremony on 7 December in Lucerne, Switzerland.
