The Love That Remains, Vigdís and The Fires are the big winners of this year’s Edda Awards

Hlynur Pálmason’s The Love That Remains scooped the top prize for Film of the Year as well as six other awards, while the biographical series Vigdis and Ugla Hauksdóttir’s The Fires each scooped six prizes.

On Friday May 29, the gala ceremony of the Icelandic Edda Awards 2026 took place at Gullhamrar in Reykjavík.

The Eddas are the country’s most prominent film and television awards, presented annually by the Icelandic Film and Television Academy. This year’s edition handed out 35 awards to film and television works that premiered in 2025.

The evening’s biggest winner was Hlynur Pálmason’s The Love That Remains (Ástin sem eftir er), with seven awards. In addition to Film of the Year, Pálmason won Director of the Year, Screenplay of the Year and Cinematography of the Year in the film categories. Saga Garðarsdóttir and Sverrir Guðnason snagged the leading acting awards, whilst Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir got the gong for Actress of the Year in a Supporting Role. Produced by Anton Máni Svansson and Katrin Pors for Still Vivid, The Love That Remains has received support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

Meanwhile, the top TV prize went to Vigdis (Vigdís), staged by Vesturport and Vigdís Production. The series, based on the life of former Icelandic president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, also won Director of the Year for Tinna Hrafnsdóttir and Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Actress of the Year in a Leading Role for Elín Hall, as well as awards for costume design, sound and production design. Vigdís has also received backing from NFTVF.

The other major film winner was Ugla Hauksdóttir’s Icelandic-Polish romantic disaster thriller The Fires (Eldarnir), which took six awards, including Actor of the Year in a Supporting Role for Jóhann G. Jóhannsson, plus prizes for visual effects, costume design, editing, production design and music. The film is produced by Netop Films and Madants, with international sales handled by Bankside Films.

Among the other winners, The Ground Beneath Our Feet (Jörðin undir fótum okkar), directed by Yrsa Roca Fannberg, was named Documentary of the Year, while Freyja Kristinsdóttir’s Postcard (Póstkort) was crowned Documentary Short of the Year. Rúnar Ingi Einarsson’s Merki took Short Film of the Year, while Vonardagur scooped Children and Youth Content of the Year. The Foreign Film of the Year award went to Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value (Affeksjonsverdi).

In addition, Freyja Kristinsdóttir was named Discovery of the Year, while director Þorsteinn Jónsson received the Icelandic Film and Television Academy’s Honorary Award for his decades-long contribution to Icelandic cinema.
