Swedish hit joined by Norway's The King’s Choice, Pyromaniac, Welcome to Norway in Oscar race.

Hannes Holm’s B.O. hit A Man Called Ove will represent Sweden at the Academy Awards nominations for Best Foreign language Film. The film based on Fredrik Backman’s best-selling novel was watched by nearly 1.8 million people in Sweden and sold to more than 50 territories including the US. In the pre-Oscar campaign, Music Box has scheduled a September 30 release in more than 40 cities. The film won three Guldbagge awards earlier this year including Best Actor (Rolf Lassgård) and the Audience award and has a chance to win the People’s Choice Award at the European Film Awards in December. A Man Called Ove was produced by SF Studios and released by Nordisk Film.

Earlier in the week, Norway announced the country’s three Oscar shortlisted films: Erik Poppe’s The King’s Choice, Erik Skjoldbjærg’s Pyromaniac and Rune Denstad Langlo’s Welcome to Norway.

The drama Pyromaniac produced by Giør Film won an Amanda award, Best actress (Liv Bernhoft Osa). The film will soon screen at Toronto’s Contemporary World Cinema section.

The refugee comedy drama Welcome to Norway produced by Motlys received two Amandas for Main actor Anders Baasmo Christiansen and supporting actor Olivier Mukuta.

The historical drama The King’s Choice produced by Paradox opens in Norway on September 23. Norway will introduce its final Oscar candidate on September 7.

A Man Called Ove, The King’s Choice, Pyromaniac and Welcome to Norway were all supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will announce its shortlist for the Foreign Language category on January 17, 2017 and the final five candidates on January 24, 2017.
