Barbara Rothenborg (White Sands, The Food Club), is directing Sonja Richter and Dar Salim in Netflix’s first Danish language film.
The thriller adapted for the screen by Anders Rønnow Klarlund and Jacob Weinreich, is based on their own novel Kærlighed for voksne (Till Death Do us Apart in English), which they co-wrote under the pseudonym Anna Ekberg.
Dar Salim (Borgen, Deliver Us) and Sonja Richter (The Bridge, Open Hearts) play Christian and Leonora who seem to have it all, and whose lives can go back to normal, now that their son has been declared healthy after a long illness. But when Leonora sees her husband with the young architect Xenia (Sus Wilkins of Greyzone) at a party, she becomes blinded by jealousy.
Other cast members include Mikael Birkkjær (Borgen, The Killing), Lars Ranthe (Another Round), Morten Burian (Ride Upon the Storm), Benjamin Kitter (A Fortunate Man), Karoline Hamm (Equinox) and Natalï Vallespir Sand (The Protectors).
Rothenborg describes Loving Adults as “a dark and twisted, thrilling yet sexy film about what terrible things men and women can end up doing to each other, if pushed too far.“
The Danish film which just started production on the island of Fyn, is the latest collaboration between Netflix and SF Studios, after the thriller Red Dot-first Swedish Netflix Original feature film- and the acclaimed TV series Snabba Cash which premiered April 7. Marcella Dichmann (The Exception) is producing for SF Studios.
“We are thrilled to expand our growing Nordic film slate together with our long-time partners at SF Studios,” said Lina Brouneus, director co-production & acquisition EMEA at Netflix. “With an unpredictable and fascinating story about love, jealousy and sacrifice, a team of some of Denmark’s most prominent talents led by Barbara Rothenborg and her unique visual style, we are confident that our members will be gripped by our first Danish language feature film.”
The film will premiere on Netflix in 2022 and at a later date on TV 2 Denmark.
Commenting on her collaboration with the global streamer, Katrine Vogelsang, Head of fiction at TV 2 said: “There is a rapid development in the market right now, so it is relevant for us to be part of the process of testing new forms of distribution. In Denmark, we don’t have the strong tradition for the television film that they do in other countries, however, this set up is very interesting for us at TV 2, especially with the strong partners at SF Studios and Netflix, with whom we have shared a great collaboration on Rita.”
TV2’s latest premium drama White Sands which premiered May 3rd, was also based on a screenplay by Anders Rønnow Klarlund and Jacob Weinreich, with Rothenborg serving as co-director.
