The six-part Swedish TV drama Raoul set to start filming in 2022, is co-written by August-prize-winning author Carl-Johan Vallgren with Jesper Harrie and Måns Herngren.
The event TV biopic is based on Ingrid Carlberg's August Prize-winning book ‘Raoul Wallenberg-The Biography’ acquired for television by SF Studios and the writing trio.
Harrie was nominated for a Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize in 2017 for the SVT series Bonus Family and was head-writer of C More/TV4’s Blinded.
Måns Herngren is co-writer of several hit Swedish comedies such as Solsidan, and Adam & Eva. He will be directing the Raoul series.
The Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg is a heroic figure of WW2, known for having saved thousands of Jews in Budapest in the second half of 1944. In January 1945, he was imprisoned by Soviet forces and disappeared. Russia claimed he died in a Soviet prison in 1947, but witnesses said he might have lived longer. To this date his legacy as a humanitarian is honoured around the world.
"The story of Raoul shows what we can achieve when we follow our compassion and belief that all men are created equal. But Raoul, who refused to abandon his fellowmen, was himself abandoned by his country and by the Wallenberg family. This gives more dramatic dimensions to the story ", said Harrie, Herngren and Vallgren.
"This is an incredibly strong story about humanity. But most of all, it is a story about how an individual, with great civil courage, could mean so much to the fate of so many people. What can be more relevant today than to tell just that?”, added Anna Croneman, Head of Drama at SVT.
The series is being produced by Tobias Åström for SF Studios, in co-production with the Swedish pubcaster and the scriptwriters, in association with Beta Film which will handled sales outside the Nordics. The film is developed with the support of the Creative Europe’s MEDIA Programme.
