The three films backed by Nordisk Film & TV Fond have been selected for the Banff World Media Festival competition unspooling June 11-14.
The Swedish true crime Riding in Darkness
produced by Jarowskij and Norwegian drama Made in Oslo produced by Tordenfilm are among five series competing for Best Non-English Language drama series.
Commissioned by C More/TV4, the harrowing drama about sexual abuse Riding in Darkness has been a resounding success for the Telia-owned broadcaster and platform.
According to C More/TV4, the series created by Ulf Kvensler was the best first season ever for C More and TV4 Play when it premiered last fall, and it broke some of the streamer’s records in terms of unique users. The show also played strongly on linear TV, despite its late airing at 23.30.
Riding in Darkness is loosely based on a true story of sexual abuse that occurred at an equestrian centre in Sweden in the 1990s to 2016. In the starring roles are Hanna Ardehn and Jonas Karlsson. Wild Bunch TV handles sales.
The Norwegian fertility drama Made in Oslo starring Pia Tjelta and Jakob Cedergren premiered on Viaplay last April. The series which was nominated for a Golden Nymph award in Monte-Carlo is sold worldwide by Federation Entertainment.
Meanwhile the animated series The Unstoppable Yellow Yeti produced by Anttu Harlin for Gigglebug Entertainment, Finland, is competing in Banff for Best Children & Youth Animation programme.
The off-beat comedy series tells the unexpected adventures of an unlikely trio of friends: a city boy, a local girl and an outcast monster, in a quirky little town above the Arctic Circle, where it’s winter all-year-round.
Joonas Utti and Anttu Harlin co-created the series with Zodiak Kids Studio France and Disney EMEA for Yle and Disney EMEA. The show which premiered last May in the UK, was co-financed by NRK, DR, SVT, and Iceland’s streaming service Síminn.
Last year the Norwegian drama comedy Countrymen produced by Rubicon TV for NRK won Best Comedy - Non-English Language series, and the Danish show Kamikaze produced by Profile Pictures for HBO Max, scooped Best Drama Series Non-English Language at the Rockie Awards.
This year’s awards ceremony will take place June 12, 2023.
