Swedish documentary scored a record $14,154 per screen average from its single New York screen debut.
Launched by Submarine Deluxe and Film Rise on March 24 in an exclusive platform screening at the prestigious Lincoln Centre, the Kasper Collin film had the second-highest per screen average of all domestic releases, behind Beauty and the Beast’s nearly $21,000 average from more than four thousand screens according to Deadline.
Another three New York venues were added and the film is now playing as well in Los Angeles, Washington DC and at the San Francisco Film Festival. Today it opens in Canada.
The reviews have been meteoric on the documentary about jazz artist Lee Morgan and his common-law wife Helen. I Called Him Morgan is number 2 on Metacritic (the site that aggregates reviews from leading world publications) after La La Land, with a 90/100 score.
“What is heart-warming is that it is the absolute top critics that have been writing the reviews in the NYT, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, Village Voice,” said Kasper Collin.
"Audience response in the US has been wonderful, and it has been a pleasure to participate in q&a sessions with participants from the film."
The film produced by Kasper Collin Produktion with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond opened in Sweden on March 31 via Non Stop Entertainment and received similar positive reviews with 4 stars in DN, Göteborgs Posten, Aftonbladet and 5 stars in Svenska Dagbladet.
The film is represented by Submarine Entertainment. Canadian rights were sold to Films We Like and UK distribution has been secured as well.
