Exclusive: The Finnish film by director Teemu Nikki and producer Jani Pösö’s company It’s Alive Films, just started filming November 17.
Snot & Splash will be the first family film for the prolific duo Nikki and Pösö who have enjoyed a winning-spree these last few months, with their feature The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic (Armani Beauty Audience Award at Venice’s Horizons Extra), and Elisa Viihde’s comedy drama Mister 8, which picked up Best Series and Best Performance (from Pekka Strang) at Canneseries.
Pösö said Snot & Splash will be truthful to It’s Alive Films’ motto, which is to make projects about ‘deadly-serious’ subjects, in an entertaining and innovative way. Here the film will have an eco-friendly message, calling on kids and their families to take care of their garbage. Based on a novel by Finland’s legendary singer-songwriter Juice Leskinen, the family adventure is set in the small town of Mouthwater where odd things happen. All the holes, including the ice holes, are disappearing. Brothers Snot and Splash find out who is behind the mysterious hole thefts and, they save the world from collapsing into a black hole.
The two main characters-the children Snot and Splash- are played by Hugo Komaro and Urho Kuokkanen, while Pekka Strang will play a dentist. Legendary actress and Aki Kaurismäki’s long-time collaborator Kati Outinen (The Man Without a Past, The Match Factory Girl) will play Strang’s mother. Other cast members include Sampo Sarkomaa (Peacemaker, Bordertown), Petteri Pennilä (Deadwind), Elina Knihtilä (The Good Son, Force of Habit), Marja Packalén (Sunday Lunch) and Matti Onnismaa (Euthanizer).
The film received co-financing from Yle, Film Tampere, support from the Finnish Film Foundation, Nordisk Film & TV Fond and Creative Media. Two co-production partners will be announced at a later date. Scanbox will handle the domestic release, scheduled for winter 2023.
