The Girl With the Needle (Pigen med nålen), will compete for the Best International Feature Film award at the 97th Academy Awards taking place March 2 in Los Angeles.
The Girl with the Needle is directed by Magnus von Horn and written by Line Langebek and the director. It is produced by Malene Blenkov / Denmark’s Nordisk Film Creative Alliance, Nordisk Film Sweden and Lava Films, Poland. The film is supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
The black-and-white film, inspired by a true story is set in Denmark in 1918. It tells about the young factory worker Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne) who starts working for Dagmar’s (Trine Dyrholm) underground adoption agency, not knowing that the newborn babies risk being killed instead of adopted.
Nominated for Best Documentary is No other Land, the Palestinian-Norwegian co-production between the Palestinian company Yabayay Media and Norwegian Antipode Films, with producers Bård Kjøge Rønning and Fabien Greenberg as co-producers. The documentary is directed by Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal.
No Other Land tells about a Palestinian activist who allies with an Israeli investigative journalist to fight against the forced displacement of the population in the West Bank.
Norwegian Mona Fastvold is nominated for Best Script together with Brady Corbet for US film The Brutalist, which is nominated in altogether 10 categories.
The film The Apprentice by Iranian-Danish-Swedish director Ali Abbasi received two actors nominations. Sebastian Stan is nominated for Best Actor in a leading role (playing Donald Trump) while Jeremy Strong is nominated as Best Actor in supporting role.
