Nightwatch-Demons are Forever which is currently filming in Aarhus and Copenhagen until November 10, is being handled internationally by TrustNordisk.

Bornedal’s original thriller Nightwatch became an instant hit, both at home and internationally, and was remade in the US with Ewan McGregor and Nick Nolte in the title roles.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, Against the Ice), was then cast as Martin, a young law student working as a night watchman at Copenhagen’s Department of Forensic Medicine, while a series of murders occurred among women in the Danish capital.

The other main role of Jens, his fellow student, was held by Kim Bodnia (The Bridge, Killing Eve). Both Coster-Waldau and Bodnia will reprise their roles, as well as Ulf Pilgaard who played inspector Wörmer.

Speaking about his 1994 film, Bornedal said: “Nightwatch was a far greater success than both I and everyone else had expected, both domestically and internationally. Probably because in many ways it was a rather personal story that many could relate to: beneath the suspense and horror, it was also a generational story about growing up, becoming mature and breaking free from youthful anarchy! Only then could the two young men, Jens and Martin, become adults. And now the time is ripe to return to the two and the new generations that surround them.“

For Bornedal, Nightwatch is “about legacy, about the silence in families, about the traumas and cuts and wounds that are allowed to live through generations.” The director is also thrilled to “return to the condensed genre that horror is. Kiss the demons, pull them into the light for a little moment. Look them in the eyes and think: "Good thing it's only a film!”

New actors who will join Nightwatch-Demons are Forever include Fanny Bornedal (The Purity of Vengeance), cast as Martin’s daughter Emma, Paprika Steen (That Time of Year), Sonja Richter (The Keeper of Lost Causes), Alex Høgh Andersen (Vikings) and Christopher Læssø (The Square, Darkland).

Top behind the scene talent include production designer Thomas Greve (The Chestnut Man, A Hijacking), cinematographer Lasse Frank (Tom of Finland, The Shamer’s Daughter, Tolkien), and editor Anders Villadsen who has worked with Bornedal on most of his films including Just Another Love Story, Deliver Us from Evil, 1864 and The Bombardment.

In Nightwatch-Demons are Forever, Emma, a medical student, takes on a nightwatch job in the forensic department. And it is no coincidence. Since the fatal night-30 years earlier, when psychopathic inspector Wörmer almost killed Emma's parents, who were saved at the very last minute by their friend Jens, her family has been haunted by this horrific memory. Her mother Kalinka, actually committed suicide when Emma was 10 and her father Martin is still the shadow of himself.

The young woman decides to investigate what happened in her parents’ past. Upon meeting with Wörmer, Emma wakes him from his coma, and unintentionally initiates a bloody revenge on all of those who sealed Wörmer’s destiny.

The film written and directed by Bornedal, is being produced by Thomas Heinesen of Nordisk Film Production, in collaboration with DR, ZDF, Nadcon, with support from the Danish Film Institute, the West Danish Film Fund and Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The Danish theatrical release via Nordisk Film is scheduled for December 25, 2023.
