Jakob Oftebro, Sofia Helin and Karin Franz Körlof took centre stage at Göteborg’s Film Festival to fête Nordic cooperation and the Fund at 30.

On January 29, Nordisk Film & TV Fond celebrated both its 30th anniversary and the winners of the 4th Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize in Göteborg. Interviewed on stage by Nordisk Film & TV Fond’s CEO Liselott Forsman, the three Scandinavian stars Jakob Oftebro, Sofia Helin and Karin Franz Körlof seized the opportunity to reiterate the quintessential role that film & TV drama has played in recent years in stimulating cultural, creative and work exchanges across the Nordic region, as well as mutual inspiration.

Oftebro, one of Scandinavia’s most versatile and prolific actors of his generation (Young Hamilton, Kon-Tiki, Tom of Finland, The Man, Warrior) said: “Working across the Nordic countries is very important and a beautiful experience. Although we’re all quite similar, this allows us to learn from each other. We also share the same fight against US films that dominate our screens.”

The Norwegian actor also stressed the higher quality of TV drama in all Nordic countries, that has put an end to the historical dominance of Danish and Swedish drama series. ”The last 10 years, we’ve seen that other nations are looking up at us [Norway], thanks notably to cult shows like Skam. We watch each other’s productions and I feel that now all Nordics countries are strong creatively. I hope we will work even more together in the future as together we’re a big, we’re not small anymore, and we won’t be as cold, noir, and lonely,” he noted.

Swedish actress Karin Franz Körlof (The Restaurant, The Wife, Greyzone), stressed her fruitful collaboration with Danish – and Hungarian - cast & crew members on Pernilla August’s A Serious Game. “I had a great experience in particular working with [Danish actor] Mikkel Boe Følsgaard. He taught me a lot,” she acklowledged.

Körlof’s co-national Sofia Helin who turned into a global star with her role as Saga Norén in the series The Bridge, mentioned the important role of Nordisk Film & TV Fond as a financier of quality Nordic content, but also as a key player in facilitating pan-Nordic collaboration.

Recalling an anecdote from The Bridge, she said: “I remember that half way through the shoot, we [Swedish and Danish cast & crew] started talking about how we felt about working together and us, Swedes we said oh we just want to be as good as you are, the Danes. They said. Really?  We watch everything you do!! So we were all standing on our toes in front of each other, doing our very best! I think that what we can do is continue to encourage and inspire each other,” she said.

Helin - executive producer of the Swedish series Honour (Heder) - also praised the industry’s greater openness in taking on board actors’ input in the creative process. “I sense as an actor that the business is more open to our creativity and has started to realise what we can contribute. This is beneficial for us all,” she claimed.

The Nordic region’s outstanding contribution to high quality TV drama was also celebrated on January 29, with the 4th Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize for Best Nordic Screenplay, handed out to writer Sara Johnsen for the Norwegian drama 22 July (NRK).
