The Most Beautiful Boy in the World and Sabaya were voted best and second-best European documentaries, while Afterglow, A Royal Secret and Blackport won in the series categories.
Set under the theme “media that matter”, the 36th Prix Europa European media festival closed on Friday with an awards ceremony in Potsdam that crowned indeed, content that matter, in the pure public service tradition.
In the documentary categories, SVT’s The Most Beautiful Boy in the World featuring the tragic effect of fame on the life of former boy icon Björn Andrésen, cast in Luchino Visconti’s Death in Venice, won best European TV Documentary of 2022.
“Thank you for public service and for free speech,” said the co-directors Kristina Lindström and Kristian Petri in their acceptance speech. They also thanked Björn Andresen for “his courage to share a story”, both unique and universal. The film was produced by Stina Gardell for Mantaray Film. See our separate story: CLICK HERE.
The Special commendation went to another SVT commissioned documentary: Sabaya directed by Hogir Hirori for Ginestra Film, which deals with a group of volunteers helping Yazidi women held captives by ISIS fighters at al-Hawl camp in Syria. See our separate story: CLICK HERE.
In the series categories, the top award for best European TV Fiction series went to Afterglow directed by Atle Knudsen for Norway’s Monster Scripted/NRK. The portrait of a mother who finds out she has cancer and the impact it has on everyone around her, had its world premiere at Canneseries 2022 where it won the High School -Best Series Awards. Two other Nordic series received Special Commendations:
- A Royal Secret (SVT) selected for the Fiction-TV Movie and Mini-series category,
- Blackport (RÚV/Arte France), part of the TV Fiction Series Category. (See separate story: CLICK HERE).
REinvent International Sales said Afterglow has been sold to the Netherlands and Slovenia, with other territories pending, while A Royal Secret will travel to Spain, Benelux, the UK, the US and Canada.
Iceland’s fishing quota drama Blackport has been sold by Paris-based APC to more than a dozen territories including North America, Spain, Portugal, Australia on top of the five Nordic countries part of the Nordic 12 pubcasters alliance.
The Most Beautiful Boy in the World, Sabaya, A Royal Secret and Blackport were supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
