Local Films on top form. By releasing the Swedish comedy Sommaren med Göran at the end of July, as counter-programming to US blockbusters, Nordisk Film took a risk that totally paid off. New local openers in Denmark (Headhunters), Norway (Upperdog) and Finland (The House of Branching Love) are also putting their stamp on the domestic charts.

Two Swedish films released by Nordisk Film were in the local Top Ten last weekend: Beck i stormen's öga, the new Swedish film by Harald Hamrell featuring the popular private eye Martin Beck was second after Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. In third position was the Swedish romcom Sommaren med Göran by Staffan Lindberg, with TV presenter Peter Magnusson in his feature film debut. The film has now passed the 415,000 admissions in its fifth week, a pleasant surprise for distributor Nordisk Film and producer Lena Rehnberg (StellaNova) who had bet on the film's wide appeal to offer it as an alternative to Hollywood summer fare.

In Denmark, Rumle Hammerich's thriller Headhunter starring Lars Mikkelsen, opened for a top position, ahead of Inglourious Basterds. Praised by the Danish film critics for its ‘classic thriller material', the film sold over 26,000 tickets from 79 screens. Headhunter was produced by Åke Sandgren for Nordisk Film. In Norway, Upperdog, the opening film of the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, was successfully launched nation-wide by Sandrew Metronome last weekend, carried by very positive reviews in the local media. The comedy drama directed by Sara Johnsen and produced by Friland Film, took the third place at the local Top Ten, with almost 20,000 admissions.

In Finland, the new Mika Kaurismäki film The House of Branching Love (Haarautuvan rakkauden talo), was number one at the Top Ten in its second weekend. The divorce comedy produced by Marianna Films, more than doubled its admissions in its second weekend, to over 28,645. The film released by FS Film is playing on 35 Finnish screens.

In Iceland, The Swedish blockbuster The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo released by Sena, was third at the Top ten with over 40,000 admissions in six weeks from four screens.

Headhunter, Upperdog, The House of Branching Love and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo were all supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
