The Norwegian director’s sophomore movie after Drib is currently filming for The Worst Person in the World’s production house Oslo Pictures.
Commercials and music video director Borgli had his international breakthrough with his hybrid debut feature Drib, which screened at SXSW and CPH:DOX in 2017. His 2020 short film Former Cult Member Hears Music for the First Time screened in competition at Sundance last year.
Sick of Myself (Syk Pike) is a black comedy about a young woman -Signe - who builds a career on the role of a victim. Signe is approaching thirty and is the least successful in her circle of young creatives. She feels particularly unsuccessful when her boyfriend suddenly breaks through as an artist, while she herself only works in a café.
An accident at work puts her on the trail of a potential self-realisation project: A dog has attacked a woman, and Signe has had blood all over her after helping out. At first glance, people think that Signe is also a victim. The misunderstanding leads to a stimulating experience of attention and consideration, a role she will live in full time. It will soon become clear how far Signe is willing to go.
Amanda-award-winning actress Kristine Kujath Thorp (Ninjababy, The North Sea) is cast as Signe. Co-stars include artist Eirik Sæther, who makes his screen debut, Andrea Bræin Hovig (Hope), Anders Danielsen Lie (The Worst Person in the World), Steinar Klouman Hallert (Thelma), Fredrik Stenberg Ditlev-Simonsen (22 July,) and Fanny Vaager.
Filming started August 2 in Oslo and will last until September 10, between Oslo and Gothenburg.
Producers Dyveke Bjørkly Graver and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar said through his earlier works, Borgli “has shown a special ability to confuse, entertain and challenge his audience. “His films play with mental and physical discomfort, as well as a large dose of humour, and Sick of Myself lifts this to a new level. “
The film is being co-produced by Sweden’s Garagefilm, Film i Väst, with co-financing from NRK, Storyline, support from the Norwegian Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, Eurimages and Creative Europe.
Scandinavian Film Distribution holds Scandinavian rights. The film is due to premiere in the fall 2022.
