SF Studios’ Danish period drama sold by REInvent is one of TV2’s niche channel’s biggest fiction series ever, with around 480,000 average viewers for its first season.

Set at Fredenslund hospital in 1952, the series chronicles the early intake and training of male nurses in post-war Denmark. The story centres on Erik (Morten Hee Andersen from Ride Upon the Storm), a young soldier Erik who must overcome people’s prejudice as he trains to become a nurse, and his relationship with fellow nurse student Anna (Molly Egeling from A Second Chance). Roni Ezra (Below the Surface) directs from a script by The Reunion’s co-writers Claudia Boderke and Lars Mering.

The series’ finale November 25 on TV2 Charlie’s new Sunday 21.00 drama slot had the highest ratings with 478,000 viewers. All six episodes are now among the 10 most watched programmes ever on TV2 Charlie.

Internationally, the show is also attracting interest. According to REInvent Studios’ Helene Aurø, buyers from Easter Europe, Spain and Benelux are circling it and offers should be announced soon. As a format, The New Nurses is also getting a lot of attention. “The series is fresh with its reversed gender focus, but it’s also a heart-warming, feelgood story with a broad cross-generational appeal.”

Season 2 will focus on Anna who tries to balance her love for Erik and her education, while standing up to her authoritarian father. Other returning cast members include Jesper Groth (Purity of Vengeance), Jens Jørn Spottag (The Legacy) and Katrine Greis-Rosenthal (A Fortunate Man). Filming started on November 28 and the premiere is set for 2019.
