The Danish feature film currently filming, is a co-production between Denmark’s Hyæne Film, and Iceland’s Netop Films, with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
New Europe Film Sales which handled Salim's acclaimed debut feature Sons of Denmark (FIPRESCI Prize, Cairo IFF and Best Director, Seattle IFF 2019) has boarded the director's sophomore feature.
The existential sci-fi drama and love story penned by Salim, is his most ambitious project to date, stretching across time and space.
When a violent earthquake occurs, it creates a mystical Fracture in the seabed, several kilometres below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, which accelerates global climate change and causes a potential threat to humanity. Meanwhile, in Denmark, young scientist Elias and aspiring singer Anita fall in love, but their passionate romance has an unfulfilled ending.
Years later, Elias is given a key role on the international team of scientists and climate researchers, tasked with closing the Fracture on the ocean floor. Despite being at the height of his career, when he meets Anita again, he is faced with the life he had left behind, and he has to ask himself: Can you choose your own destiny?
Headlining the cast as Elias and Anita are respectively Simon Sears (Shorta, Shadow & Bone) and singer/composer Nanna Øland Fabricius, in her first major screen appearance.
The Scandinavian ensemble cast also includes Magnus Krepper (The Unlikely Murderer, Queen of Hearts), Halldóra Geirhardsdóttir (Woman at War), Zaki Youssef (Sons of Denmark), Morten Holst (Pros and Cons, The Lawyer) and Iselin Shumba (Ragnarok, Home for Christmas). The young Anita and Elias are played by Anna Søgaard Frandsen and Viktor Hjelmsøe.
Top crew members include cinematographer Jacob Møller (Shorta, Journal 64), production designer Gustav Pontoppidan (Winter Brothers, Shorta), composer Valgeir Sigurdsson (The County), editors Jenna Mangulad (Sons of Denmark) and Mads Michael Olsen (Persona non Grata, Ride Upon the Storm).
Eternal is produced by Daniel Mühlendorph, the director’s partner in Hyæne Film, with co-producers Grímar Jónsson and Tjörvi Thorsson of Netop Films. The film received support from the Danish Film Institute, The West Danish Film Fund, DR, the Icelandic Film Centre, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, RÚV, and Reykjavik Visuals.
The domestic theatrical release scheduled for August 3, 2023, will be handled by Nordisk Film Distribution, in charge of Scandinavian rights. Sena will release the film in Iceland.
