C More ups Young Adult drama commissioning

The Swedish series Heartbeats toplining Nora Rios (Caliphate) and Simon Edenroth (A Man Called Ove) is the first of three YA titles set to premiere on C More in 2022.

Well established in the high-end crime and comedy genres with long-time favourites such as Beck or Solsidan, Telia’s streaming service C More is upping its scripted content catering for the younger viewers, in a fiercely competitive streaming space.

The first title set to premiere January 12, 2022 is Heartbeats, Swedish remake of the Norwegian hit Hjerteslag (ANTI/TV2 Norway).

The story follows 23-year-old single Mio (Nora Rios) who works part time in a clothes shop, and parties hard every day of the week. Now she is planning to move to Berlin with her best friend Katja (Felicia Truedsson of Young Royals). At the other side of Stockholm, viewers get to meet Anders (Simon Edenroth), a student at the prestigious KTH-Royal Institute of Technology. Their paths cross during a messy night out. They both see the evening as the first and last time they meet. But what started as an innocent flirtation will later put them in front of a life-changing decision.

“My ambition is to tell about life as a twenty-something - for real! said director and head-writer Linn Mannheimer (Alla Hästar Hemma). “A lot of material comes from how I myself experienced that time; to want to be an adult and a child at the same time. Everything was black and white, on and off. You want to be free but still feel some kind of meaning, find security without being too boxed. Go out several evenings a week even though you can’t afford it. And all the fun - nightlife, innocent flirting, going home together on a summer night. We want to create a world you recognise and do not want to tear yourself away from,” she said.

Amy Deasismont - actress and creator/director of Thunder in My Heart, is episodic director.

The eight-part series is produced by Annika Barklund. Executive producers are Erik McAllister for Baluba and Sonja Hermele for TV4/C More.

Two other YA series are currently shooting:

  • Likea is a comedy series about life as an influencer, created by Vera Herngren and Felicia Danielsson. The series directed by Eddie Åhgren (The Bonus Family) is produced by Jonas Åhlund for FLX. Dunja Vujović is executive producer for TV4/ C More.
  • The Corridor (Korridoren) is a contemporary drama that takes place in a student environment. Screenwriters are Emil Stenberg, Emil Eriksson and Alexander Havelda. The series is directed by Molly Nutley and produced by Joana Sorobetea for Nelson & Frank's. Lisa Dahlberg is executive producer for TV4 / C More.

Commenting on the upcoming series, Piodor Gustafsson, Head of Scripted Content in the Nordics for TV4 Media said: “Even though the series differ in many respects, all of them depict young adults' world, reality and everyday life. These are strong stories with a universe to get lost in and characters to love. The target group for this type of series is much broader than you might think, not least because all of us who are no longer 20-something can dream back and relive memories,” he said.

At the other end of the commissioning spectrum, the high-end drama The Congregation (Knutby) starring Alba August, Aliette Opheim and Einar Bredefeldt just premiered November 1 on C More, ahead of its launch on the linear commercial channel TV4 November 11.
