The spy series produced by Anagram Sweden and Network Movie Germany for SVT and ZDF just started filming in Germany.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment handles world sales.
The six-part thriller series West of Liberty (Väster om friheten) is based on Thomas Engström’s eponymous novel and first of four books about former Stasi and CIA informant Ludwig Licht.
Ludwig Licht (played by Wotan Wilke Möhring) has retired from the secret services and runs a bar in Kreuzberg, Berlin. When his old CIA boss GT Berner (Mathew Marsh of Dunkirk) asks him to work on a case involving Lucien Gell (Babylon Berlin’s Lars Eidinger), the corrupt leader of whistle-blower site Hydraleaks, Ludwig gets a chance to do one last coup. Lucien Gell is suspected of the murder of three Americans in a barbershop in Marrakesh. This, at least is what claims Faye Morris (Darling’s Michelle Meadows) Hydraleaks’ former spokesperson. She barely escaped the Marrakesh attack and wants revenge.
The series directed by Austria’s Barbara Eder, is adapted for the screen by co-writers Sara Heldt (Death of a Pilgrim) and Donna Sharp (The Team, season 2). Gunnar Carlsson of Anagram Sweden is producing together with Wolgang Cimera and Bettina Wente of Network Movie, in co-production with Film i Väst, Film i Skåne, with support from the Swedish Film Institute, Medienstiftung NRW and Creative Europe.
Rights were pre-bought by YLE and TV2 Norway. Filming between Berlin, Cologne, Morocco and Sweden will end in May and delivery is set for the fall 2018.
